Bryan College Advanced Medical Spa Therapy graduate Mya Julius decided to pursue her passion for esthetics and now she’s working in a spa as a lead technician. She helps train others, create new services, and handle client relations. "I am doing basically everything that I learned in the program at Bryan College."
Mya always loved the makeup industry, which led her to work at places like Mac, Sephora, and Benefit. It was working in that industry that led her to look into the program at Bryan College, which she said ultimately brought everything full circle. “It had makeup in the course, so I could still follow my passion. But then I could learn about everything else that I had an interest in, and then it all kind of tied together once I got into the program.”
She loved that the program was accelerated and incorporated specialization in multiple treatments. After seeing the campus, she said she knew Bryan College was the right choice for her. "I was like, you know what I'm sold. I don't need to see anything else. Everything just felt right when I was there. They have everything that I want. The place looks amazing. It's not too hard for me to get here. It's perfect."
She really liked her teachers, who she said were all kind and passionate about what they were teaching. “All of the teachers are amazing in their own ways, and everybody has their own teaching style.”
She enjoyed the overall atmosphere of the school, which she said was very happy. “It was a very nice calm feeling to be in that place because everybody was so nice, and nobody would look at you differently just because they didn't know you,” she said. “Everybody got along, especially in the clinic. Everybody would help each other out if needed. It was a very nice place to be in. You could tell that the atmosphere was very happy."
The biggest challenge she faced during the program was how quickly they learned, especially in courses like Medi-Spa, where students learn everything from Fitzpatrick skin typing and patch testing to laser hair capillary and pigment removal techniques. She prioritized her studying and she said that made it easy for her to stay on top of everything as they progressed from topic to topic.
Of everything she learned, she loved learning about skincare and facials. She had never gotten a facial before the program, and she especially liked being able to see the benefits of the services herself. "I started to take a lot more of an interest because I could see that the products actually did work."
She said overall, the program was challenging but great. She said it prepared her for working in the industry. "It taught you everything that you should know,” she said. In the future, she hopes to open her own business, but right now, she loves what she does.
“It's so fun to me, because doing services, the time just flies," she said. "You just feel energized by it, and it's just really cool to me that I was able to go to school, learn about all of these things, and walk out of school and into a job that allows me to do the exact same thing that I learned."
Her advice for anyone considering the program is to be prepared to study. "The courses are very, very fast, and if you're not going to take the time to study, you're going to fall behind very easily,” she said. “It really did prepare me for what I was going to have to need going into the industry, but it was also the perfect amount of time for me to learn how to do everything."
